Sherwin-Williams is still a great choice when painting your home. But it has a little competition this year, according to J.D. Power’s 2021 Paint Satisfaction Study.

Last year, Sherwin-Williams swept all categories in the annual J.D. Power survey. But this year, Benjamin Moore grabbed the top honor in the interior paint segment, with Sherwin-Williams slipping all the way to third place.

In compiling its rankings, J.D. Power surveyed 5,804 customers who had bought and used interior paint, exterior paint and/or exterior stain in the prior 12 months.

The top three finishers in the interior paint category were:

  1. Benjamin Moore
  2. BEHR
  3. Sherwin-Williams

The top three finishers in the exterior paint category were:

  1. Sherwin-Williams
  2. Benjamin Moore
  3. BEHR

The top three finishers in the exterior stain category were:

  1. Sherwin-Williams
  2. Glidden
  3. Valspar

Customers ranked Sherwin-Williams No. 1 among paint retailers overall. Benjamin Moore independent retailers finished second, followed by Lowe’s.

The coronavirus pandemic has not stopped people from working on their homes, with 37% of homeowners saying they either currently are working on a home improvement project or will be within the next three months.

Interestingly, 98% of paint and stain shoppers report feeling safe and comfortable when they shop in the store, despite the pandemic. In a press release, Christina Cooley, director of the Home Intelligence practice at J.D. Power, says:

“The effort put forth by paint retailers and staff to ensure the safety of their customers has undoubtedly paid off. Though we’ve seen a slight increase with exterior paint and stain being purchased online, interior paint shoppers still heavily rely on the consultative in-store experience.”
